Dawn tucked her fingers deeper inside her sleeves, the arms in it were too long and so she kept her hands warmed by pulling the ends of the sleeves over her fingers. Sighing she picked up another small, flat stone off the lake's banks and skimmed it across the surface. She didn't have inkling to conform to the rest of the school and go to the ball, firstly it was just a stupid occasion marking Halloween which was supposed to be spooky because of witches and wizards – which they were, and secondly because Dawn had decided it was just an annual event to get the whole school dressed up stupidly, and for the guys to gawp at the girls in their hardly their costumes.
However, it was cold out tonight, there was a soft glow of light from the castle, and a quiet echo of the noise going on with in. But outside wasn’t so dark; the moon was full, and casting a ghostly glow over the grounds. Dawn bent down to pick up another stone just as she heard someone walking around the grounds behind her.

Adler was in the same boat as Dawn. Excpet, it wasn't so much as he didn't want to conform - he just thought it was a bit stupid. Besides, only only had a few good friends and they would have been in engaging conversations and dances with their dates. Alder's sister had gone. He thought it was weird, because she could be as silent as he was sometimes. Not like he minded her going, it was just kind of puzzling.
As one might have guessed, it was Adler who had walked out to the lake in a lapse of boredness. At first he didn't realize that anyone was there until he heard the plip-plopping of a stone being skipped and going under. He looked at the edge of the water to see a girl that, surprise!, he didn't recognize. HE waited a second to see if she noticed he was there, then cleared his throat lightly to clear the awkwardness and he looked out arcross the water. "Not a fan of dancing?" he tried to guess why she wasn't at the ball.

"Not a fan of dancing?"
Dawn looked over her shoulder to see who it was, skipped the stone and then replied, whilst picking up another stone, “Got it in one,” she said, smiling slightly, “What about you?” she asked, kneading the stone between her two hands before throwing it. She didn’t recognise the guy, although she thought she’d seen him around school sometimes. However, she didn’t know his name, and wasn’t going to ask, just yet anyway.

((Hehe, don't worry... it means like 'you got it right in one guess' ... you see?))

(( hahah.. ok, play ball! ))
Adler stayed a fair distance away as they talked, not wanting to invade her personal space or anything. He grinned at her answer and stuck his hands in his pockets - like he did so often. He shook his head. "I don't have much Halloween spirit, I guess... and, yeah, I don't really dance either." he confessed to the girl.

"I don't have much Halloween spirit, I guess... and, yeah, I don't really dance either."
Dawn nodded, “The whole thing is dire,” she replied, moving further away from the lake and slumping down on the grass, “People just lack in fortitude if they go for the sake of it, it’s like on Halloween and Christmas every girl has to tolerate obtuse guys – no offence, ogling them and groping their arses just cause it’s a ball,” she turned to face the boy, “And where exactly is the fun in celebrating ‘scary’ witches and wizards – have people not even realised we’re the ‘scary’ witches and wizards? I mean come on!” She sighed, and looked back at the lake, “Sorry for ranting on at you.”

Her rant made him grin. "No, I don't mind. In fact, its a relief to listen to some one who actually seems to get it instead of everyone else. The whole concept of a ball has been overthrown with what you just defined it as - basically guys looking to find a way to have sex on the dance floor." As he was, in fact, a guy, he knew how their minds worked. Luckily, he also had common sense - which alot of his classmates seemed to have never picked up themselves.

Dawn was slightly taken a back that the boy had said what he had. It was refreshing to hear some one who held the same point of view as Dawn – those people were seldom and almost no one who held Dawn’s view was in her house. She sighed and stretched out on the grass, lying down to look at the stars overhead, “Of course there are better things to do than attend balls – like watching stars,” she smiled, lifting the mood.

He looked at the girl, then looked up. Although the moon was full, the sky was still littered with stars. Of course, having to sit through 7 years of astronomy - Adler immediatly (and unwillingly) spotted several constellations glistening overhead. "Watching them is fine - but have you ever tried to count them?"

“Actually no,” Dawn replied, “Sometimes you can respect things more if you don’t know anything about them…” she looked up at the sky again, “The universe seems a smaller place, if there is a limit on the stars.” She smiled wistfully.
Placing her hands under her head she lay down with her knees propped up, still watching the stars. Like Adler, Dawn had spent most of her time at Hogwarts attending Astronomy lessons, and she had never realised how useful the class could be before.

He grinned a little at her answer. When he was younger and just starting to break away from being around his friends all the time, he used to spend a couple nights a month just trying to count the stars. Having a rather long attention span - he made it to 550 once. "True, but counting them can also make it seem like a bigger space because you can never count them all..." he pointed out.

“Also true, but by beginning to count them, you are also counting one less ambiguity of the sky,” she grinned and sat up slightly, propping herself up on her elbows. She had one golden eyebrow raised at him slightly, in a way which suggested she was interested in what the boy had to say for himself, and not just disregarding his opinion, however the look she gave him also showed she didn’t agree with him.

He just kept the same grin on his lips as they spoke. "Counting one less? I would think that it would create more if anything. You can always see the stars, so by counting them doesn't change them. But not being to ever be able to count them all makes the stars as a whole ambiguous." He used the last word to play off her own words. He wasn't trying to fight with the girl, or anything, just get his point across is all.

Dawn rolled over so she was facing him and placed her hands so they cupped her chin, with her elbows on the ground. It was shameful for the rest of the year really, as most of the people who tried to take off Dawn’s vocabulary didn’t know what simple words such as ‘ambiguous’ meant. It was nice to have a conversation with some one who did. “Like you said, you are always able to perceive the stars, so would it not be more enthralling to never know how many stars there are? Even though they may not adapt you are able to think they are diverse everyday if you wished it. By knowing the exact number you will always know the stars as that, and not allow your imagination to run free to imagine the universe as you see it,” she grinned, happy she had put her argument forward well – she’d also put a couple of long words into her sentences to take off his play off of her. Still smiling she said, “You see?”
((OCC: Sorry, it's not a very good post cause my vocab is pretty poor!))
